Nicholas Galitzine walked onto the Masters of the Universe set in Prague wearing 40 pounds of muscle suit and prop armor. “This is ridiculous,” he laughed to director Travis Knight. “I love it.”

June 5, 2026 Release

Masters of the Universe hits theaters June 5, 2026, through Amazon MGM Studios with a reported $180 million budget – the most expensive film based on a Mattel toy property. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke called it their “tentpole franchise starter” during a presentation at CinemaCon 2025.

Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam/He-Man after beating out Glen Powell and Austin Butler. The 30-year-old British actor spent eight months training with the same team that prepared Chris Hemsworth for Thor, gaining 25 pounds of muscle to fill out the iconic costume.

Camila Mendes plays Teela after a lengthy search for someone who could portray the character’s warrior strength and emotional depth. Her five-year deal suggests Amazon expects multiple films. Jared Leto was cast as Skeletor in controversial choice that divided fans until set photos revealed his surprisingly comic-accurate appearance.

Idris Elba’s Masterful Casting

Idris Elba voices Man-At-Arms, Teela’s adoptive father and weapons master. His casting brings gravitas to the mentor role. Alison Brie voices Evil-Lyn, Skeletor’s second-in-command, in motion-capture performance that required her to train in martial arts for fight scenes against Teela.

The He-Man movie also cast Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Keith David as King Randor, and Judy Greer as Queen Marlena. Amazon secured this ensemble through aggressive salary offers and multi-picture deals that suggest confidence in franchise potential.

Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings, Bumblebee) directs from a script by David Callaham (Shang-Chi, Spider-Verse). Knight’s animation background influenced the decision to use practical sets and costumes whenever possible rather than full CGI environments.

The Eternia Vision

Production designer Patrick Tatopoulos (Independence Day, Godzilla) created a 360-degree Castle Grayskull set that’s reportedly the largest single practical set built for a film since Avatar. The throne room alone cost $8 million to construct in a Czech Republic soundstage.

The Masters of the Universe aesthetic pulls from the original 1980s Filmation cartoon’s color palette while incorporating realistic textures and materials. Knight wanted Eternia to feel alien but grounded, avoiding the overly saturated CGI look of recent fantasy films.

Action sequences were choreographed by 87Eleven (John Wick, Atomic Blonde), ensuring He-Man’s super-strength translates to believable combat rather than weightless CGI battles. Galitzine performed most of his own stunts after extensive wire work training.

Franchise Plans

Amazon Studios already greenlit Masters of the Universe 2 contingent on the first film earning $500 million worldwide. Internal projections estimate $650-750 million based on comparable fantasy properties. The nostalgic Gen X audience combined with younger viewers discovering the property through Kevin Smith’s Netflix animated series creates broad demographic appeal.

Mattel Films CEO Robbie Brenner confirmed several spinoff projects in development, including a She-Ra film and a Skeletor origin story. The ambitious franchise plans mirror Marvel’s interconnected universe strategy.

The He-Man movie faces stiff June competition from Avatar 3 and Inside Out 3. But Knight believes the property’s unique fantasy-sci-fi blend occupies a different niche than those films. Early footage screened at CinemaCon 2025 received standing ovations, suggesting the film successfully updates beloved characters for modern audiences.

Whether Masters of the Universe succeeds depends on balancing fan service with accessible storytelling for newcomers. Knight’s track record suggests he understands this balance. If Galitzine’s charisma matches his physicality, He-Man might finally get the cinematic treatment the character deserves after decades of failed development.
