Dominic Monaghan was hiking in New Zealand’s South Island last month when he got the call from Andy Serkis. “We need Merry back,” Serkis said. Monaghan’s response: “I never really left.”

The Shire Connection
Dominic Monaghan Lord of Rings return for The Hunt for Gollum (2026) makes narrative sense. The film explores Aragorn tracking Gollum between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring, but Monaghan revealed to Empire Magazine that Merry appears in flashback sequences showing the hobbits’ lives before Frodo’s quest.
The original trilogy earned $2.991 billion across three films, with Return of the King winning 11 Oscars including Best Picture. Warner Bros has struggled to recapture that magic with The Hobbit trilogy earning $2.938 billion but facing mixed critical reception.

Monaghan’s Merry was always the more mature of the hobbit friends – the one who understood war’s reality after pledging service to Théoden. His character arc from prankster to warrior resonated with fans who appreciated his growth throughout the trilogy.
Pippin’s Status
Billy Boyd’s return as Pippin remains unconfirmed, though Monaghan hinted they’re “working on making it happen.” The two actors have maintained close friendship since filming ended 22 years ago. Their real-life bond translated to perfect on-screen chemistry that made Merry and Pippin the trilogy’s emotional heart.
The Hunt for Gollum has a reported budget of $160 million – modest compared to modern blockbusters but substantial for a streaming film. Warner Bros plans theatrical release through New Line Cinema before it hits Max. Peter Jackson returns as producer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Andy Serkis directs and reprises Gollum through motion capture technology that’s evolved significantly since 2003. The 67-year-old actor told Collider the film explores Gollum’s psychology deeper than previous films allowed, showing his internal conflict between Sméagol and Gollum personas.
Cast Expansion
Ian McKellen confirmed Gandalf returns despite his age being “the main hurdle” at 86. Viggo Mortensen is in negotiations to reprise Aragorn, though his age (67) complicates playing a character meant to be in his 30s during this timeline. De-aging technology similar to The Irishman may be required.
The Lord of the Rings return also includes potential appearances from Orlando Bloom’s Legolas and possibly even Elijah Wood’s Frodo in prologue scenes. Warner Bros wants this to feel like a proper Middle-earth film rather than a disposable spinoff.
Monaghan described his return as “coming home” during a podcast interview. He’s stayed connected to Tolkien’s world through voice work in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (where he narrated lore videos) and constant fan convention appearances.
May 2026 Release
The Hunt for Gollum releases May 9, 2026, competing against Mission: Impossible 8 later that month. Warner Bros believes the fantasy audience differs enough from action fans to avoid direct competition. The studio also hopes nostalgia for Jackson’s original films drives box office.
The film’s success could determine whether Warner Bros green-lights more Middle-earth projects. Several pitches reportedly sit in development, including a Helm’s Deep origin story and a First Age adaptation covering the Silmarillion era.
Monaghan’s involvement gives the project credibility with hardcore fans who’ve been skeptical of post-Jackson Middle-earth content. If Dominic Monaghan Lord of Rings return delivers the same warmth and humor he brought to the original trilogy, The Hunt for Gollum might successfully expand Tolkien’s cinematic universe beyond Peter Jackson’s original vision.
