Somewhere in London, a typewriter just stopped clacking. Steven Knight has confirmed that the first draft of the next James Bond movie is complete — his words, uttered into a Hits Radio microphone, and now the most reassuring sentence Bond fans have heard in years.

Let’s savor the context, because Bond 26 has been a rumor with a martini for what feels like a decade. Knight is writing, Denis Villeneuve is directing, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing — with Villeneuve’s longtime collaborator Tanya Lapointe on board as an executive producer. Notably, the script was reportedly written without any actor in mind — a blank page for a blank tux. Casting chatter has been circling for ages, with trade reporting pointing to fresh rounds of auditions over the summer and a possible announcement before the year is out. A completed first draft doesn’t confirm any of that, but it does mean the train has officially left the station.

This is also the first Bond developed fully under Amazon MGM’s creative control, which makes everything feel a little like a regime change. Remember, No Time to Die closed out Daniel Craig’s run way back in 2021, and since then the franchise has mostly been a press release and a pile of betting odds. Knight, the man who built Peaky Blinders and wrote the royal pressure-cooker Spencer, is not a boring choice. Villeneuve, coming off two Dune epics and Blade Runner 2049, is the opposite of a boring choice. A director who can make sand feel monumental should have no trouble with a casino, a car chase, and a volcano lair — hypothetically. We’re just saying the toolbox fits. Between them, Bond 26 already has more auteur energy than the last three films combined.

But let’s keep the champagne corked. A first draft is a milestone, not a movie. It will get notes, rewrites, more rewrites, and the kind of studio polish that can sand a screenplay into something unrecognizable. Villeneuve isn’t rolling cameras tomorrow, and there’s still no title, no release date, and — crucially — no Bond. The tuxedo is hanging in the closet, freshly pressed, waiting for a neck to fill it.

That’s the real headline hiding under the script news. Whoever lands the role inherits the most scrutinized costume fitting in cinema, and the production seems determined to keep us guessing until the last possible second. Every actor with a jawline and a British passport has been “rumored” at this point. The bookmakers are exhausted. We are all exhausted.

Still, progress is progress. Bond 26 has gone from a maybe to a script — from vibes to pages — and a Knight-Villeneuve collaboration is the kind of pairing that justifies the wait. If the first draft is anywhere near as sharp as Peaky Blinders at its peak, 007 is in for a very good decade.

A first draft also means the production can finally start comparing its pages against its ambitions, and Amazon can start figuring out what its marquee franchise actually costs. So the draft is done. Now comes the fun part: watching Hollywood try to keep a secret. Good luck to them. They’ve never managed it before.
