Brie Larson has had much success in the world of acting. She broke box office records with her debut in the MCU as Captain Marvel and had her directorial debut with Unicorn Store. But even before that, Larson earned a Leading Actress Academy Award in 2016 for her harrowing performance in Room. But what some might not know is that Larson has some singing chops that lent to her early music career and are featured in a couple of her movies as well.

Brie Larson not only can sing, but had a full-fledge music career too

The quick answer to the question “Can Brie Larson sing?” is yes, she can. Actually, she was a burgeoning pop star that performed and wrote her own music. Her debut album, Finally Out of P.E. came out in 2005 when Larson was 16. She had writing credits on 9 out of the 13 songs, with one of them even co-written by pop-punk princess, Avril Lavigne

The album itself is very much a product of its time. Not only does it have an addictive pop-punk vibe, but there are some early-2000s synthetic beats as well. In an interview with Kids World, teenaged Larson prided herself on the writing she was doing. “I think that I write about stuff that others don’t write about,” she said. “I don’t have a bunch of love songs cuz I don’t really have much boy experience. I just write about what I am actually going through in my real life.” The title, she explained, came from a negative gym teacher she once had.

She toured with 2000s teen heartthrob Jesse McCartney

Before her album was released, Larson stepped into her true pop star role by touring with Jesse McCartney on the Beautiful Soul Tour in 2004. They stopped in malls throughout America too, and if you can remember the early 2000s, you’ll know that mall tours and Jesse McCartney were super in at the time. She even shared on Twitter in 2017 that she performed at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA too.

She proved she’s truly a performer in ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’

While Larson received some exposure on the album and tour, she didn’t pursue other musical projects after her first CD. But that’s not the end of her music catalog by any means. In the 2010 cult classic Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Larson expertly played Pilgrim’s way cooler ex, Envy Adams.

Envy is the lead singer for the band The Clash At Demonhead and has a spectacular musical number to the song “Black Sheep,” originally by Metric. And if you thought Larson was going to knock that performance out of the park, you’d be correct.
