Glen Powell trades his Top Gun: Maverick heartthrob status for prosthetics and wigs in Hulu’s “Chad Powers,” premiering September 30 with a two-episode launch. Created by Powell and Loki writer Michael Waldron, this six-episode comedy series transforms the Anyone But You star into an unrecognizable walk-on quarterback desperate for redemption.

Chad Powers Origins: From ESPN Sketch to Hulu Series

The series originated from NFL quarterback Eli Manning’s viral ESPN+ segment where he went undercover as “Chad Powers” at Penn State tryouts for Eli’s Places. Executive producers Peyton and Eli Manning connected with Powell and Waldron through Creative Artists Agency, developing the 15-minute sketch into a full series. “Let’s Mrs. Doubtfire it, and let’s see how far we can take this lie,” Powell explained about expanding the concept.

Filmed from August 2024 with “Chad Powers” serving as Powell’s television return since Scream Queens in 2015, the production features Steve Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson, Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, and Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd. Tony Yacenda (American Vandal) directed episodes, while Natalie Holt composed the score for 20th Television.

Powell’s Physical Comedy

Powell admitted “Chad Powers” represents “one of the hardest characters” he’s ever played, requiring two completely different personalities within the same role. The actor underwent extensive prosthetics and wig work to become the bumbling Chad, while maintaining Russ Holiday’s quarterback skills underneath the disguise.

The Manning brothers heavily involved themselves in Powell’s football training, with Peyton revealing: “They sent Eli and me the videos of his throwing sessions” to ensure authentic quarterback mechanics. This attention to detail reflects the series’ commitment to sports authenticity despite its comedic premise.

Hulu’s September Launch

“Chad Powers” premieres September 30 on Hulu and Disney+, with weekly Tuesday releases following the two-episode launch. The streaming strategy positions the series for fall viewing, competing against traditional network premieres. Powell’s rising star power from Hit Man and Twisters brings significant audience anticipation to the project.

The series marks Powell’s evolution from romantic lead to comedy transformer, proving his range extends beyond conventional heartthrob roles. With authentic sports elements and Mrs. Doubtfire-style identity comedy, “Chad Powers” could establish Powell as a versatile performer capable of both action and comedy excellence.
