Jason Statham’s “The Beekeeper 2” officially enters pre-production with Nobody 2 director Timo Tjahjanto taking over from David Ayer, who remains as producer. The Indonesian filmmaker recently completed London location scouting, promising to transform Statham’s Adam Clay into his personal version of Marvel’s Punisher for the highly anticipated sequel.
Tjahjanto’s Beekeeper 2 Vision
Director Timo Tjahjanto revealed his attraction to the franchise stems from Statham’s resemblance to Frank Castle. “I’m definitely drawn to the Beekeeper series just because when I watched it, I always felt that, ‘Wow, this is essentially Statham playing one of my favorite characters in the Marvel universe, which is The Punisher,'” Tjahjanto told ScreenRant.
Production Timeline & Statham’s Perfectionism
Tjahjanto completed London location scouting in August 2025, with filming expected to begin early 2026. The director praised Statham’s work ethic: “Working with Jason Statham, he’s such a perfectionist. He was like, ‘Timo, please, can we do this?’ And I said, ‘Alright, Jason, I’m trying so hard not to disappoint you'”.
The original film’s success—$152.4 million worldwide against a $40 million budget—guaranteed sequel approval from Miramax and Punch Palace Productions. With 71% critics and 92% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes, expectations remain high for Tjahjanto’s action-heavy approach.
Franchise Under New Direction
While David Ayer steps back to producer role, his influence remains through the established world-building and character foundation. Tjahjanto brings experience from successful action sequels, having recently delivered Nobody 2 starring Bob Odenkirk to critical acclaim.
