The wizarding world just got a familiar face as Warwick Davis officially returns to Hogwarts, reprising his beloved role as Professor Filius Flitwick in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series. Announced during the September 1 “Back to Hogwarts” celebration, Davis becomes the first actor from the original film series to return in the same role for the ambitious TV reboot.
The Harry Potter HBO Series Casting
Davis, who portrayed the Charms master and Head of Ravenclaw House across all eight films (2001-2011), brings continuity to what was initially positioned as a completely fresh start. “Until now, the reboot has been positioned as a completely fresh start. A new cast, a new decade-long plan, a chance to give each book the space of a full season,” noted industry analysts following the announcement.
The casting decision comes alongside seven other character confirmations, including Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle. Sirine Saba will play Professor Pomona Sprout (replacing Miriam Margolyes), while Richard Durden appears as the ghostly Professor Cuthbert Binns—a character cut from the original films.
Production Details
Written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes, the Harry Potter HBO series spans a planned decade with the first season debuting in 2027. Production commenced summer 2024 at various UK locations, with J.K. Rowling serving as executive producer alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.
However, controversy emerged when Harry Potter film director Chris Columbus criticized the project after seeing recent set photos, asking “what’s the point?” regarding the series’ similarity to the original films. This criticism highlights ongoing debates about the necessity of remaking beloved source material so soon after the original adaptations.
Interestingly, while Davis returns as Flitwick, his other goblin role of Griphook transfers to Leigh Gill (Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux), suggesting selective character continuity rather than wholesale actor retention. The Harry Potter HBO series will air on HBO and HBO Max in available markets, including upcoming launches in Germany, Italy, and the UK, positioning it as a major international streaming event that bridges generational fan bases while sparking debates about creative necessity versus commercial opportunity.
