The Russo Brothers have officially declared “Avengers Doomsday” their most ambitious undertaking, calling it “the biggest film they’ve ever made” during their London filming update at D23 2025. Currently shooting at Pinewood Studios with an ensemble cast that reads like a Marvel multiverse fever dream, this May 1, 2026 release represents the MCU’s most complex production to date.

The Avengers Doomsday Production Scale

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, Avengers: Doomsday features Robert Downey Jr.’s shocking return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom. “Right now, we’re in London shooting Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. This movie is, to say the least, a big one for us. It’s bigger than anything we’ve ever done,” the Russo Brothers revealed in their D23 video message.

The film’s massive ensemble includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), and returning X-Men actors Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Channing Tatum (Gambit). Paul Rudd’s unexpected interruption during the Russo Brothers’ D23 video, where he “jumped in and blocked the camera, turning the update into a playful interruption,” showcased the production’s lighter moments amid its epic scale.

Marvel’s Multiverse Gamble

The Avengers Doomsday production represents Marvel’s most significant creative pivot since the original Avengers assembly. Originally planned as The Kang Dynasty, the film transformed following Jonathan Majors’ legal issues and subsequent firing in December 2023. Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom came with the condition that the Russo Brothers return as directors, reuniting the team behind Infinity War and Endgame.

Filming began April 2025 across England and Bahrain, with cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and production designer Kasra Farahani crafting the multiverse-spanning visuals. The film’s narrative focuses on incursions catastrophic collisions between realities—that threaten the entire multiverse, requiring unprecedented coordination between Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, and X-Men teams.

The controversial recasting of Downey Jr. from hero to villain sparked intense fan debates, though early test screenings reportedly received positive responses. As the Avengers Doomsday production continues, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has teased additional cast reveals, suggesting this multiverse event truly represents the MCU’s most ambitious crossover attempt.
