Is Supergirl Going to Kill the Super-Dog? An Investigation Into Krypto’s Fate

There is a special place in cinematic hell reserved for movies that hurt dogs. Filmmakers know this. They exploit this. They show you a fluffy companion in peril and suddenly you’re emotionally compromised, weeping into your popcorn, willing to forgive plot holes if the good boy just makes it to the credits. Which brings us to Supergirl and the increasingly concerning footage of Krypto looking… not great.

DC Studios has been releasing teaser material for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and in every single clip, Krypto appears to be having the worst day of his super-life. We’re talking lying down, looking sad, possibly poisoned, with Kara kneeling beside him looking like she’s about to make a terrible decision. The internet, being the internet, has spiraled into panic. “Will Krypto die?” is currently being typed into search bars with the urgency of someone googling “is this rash normal” at 3 a.m.

The good news—if you can call it that—is that Supergirl is adapting the comic storyline Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and in that source material, Krypto does get poisoned by a villain named Krem. It’s bad. It’s dramatic. There are tears. But Kara finds a cure, and Krypto makes a full recovery to continue being the goodest super-boy. So unless DC Studios has decided to deviate significantly from the source material for the specific purpose of making you cry (which, admittedly, they are capable of), Krypto should survive this movie.

That said, Krypto has died in comics before. In Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, he sacrificed himself to save Superman from Kryptonite Man, dying from radiation exposure after literally tearing the villain’s throat out. It was heroic. It was devastating. It was the kind of death that makes you put down the comic and stare at a wall for a while. The film adaptation would be wise to avoid this, unless they want theaters to sound like collective therapy sessions.

So breathe easy, pet lovers. Probably. Krypto will likely live to fly another day, though he may need some serious recovery time and possibly a spa day at the Fortress of Solitude. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives June 26, 2026, which gives you plenty of time to emotionally prepare for the possibility of temporary dog distress.

Catch Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in theaters June 26, 2026, and maybe bring tissues just in case. Check out the comics on DC Universe Infinite to prepare yourself.
