Jason Segel falls in love with a serial killer. The How I Met Your Mother star—6’4″, puppy-dog eyes, professional nice guy—plays against type in Over Your Dead Body, opposite Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, The Babysitter), cinema’s reigning scream queen. The trailer reveals their twisted rom-com: he’s a mortician, she’s a murderer, and their meet-cute involves a corpse.

Love at First Fright

Segel is Arthur, small-town mortician, socially awkward, romantically desperate. Weaving is Margo, mysterious newcomer, charming, deadly. Their courtship is When Harry Met Sally by way of American Psycho: dinner dates, movie nights, disposing of bodies. Arthur discovers Margo’s hobby—she kills abusive men—but rationalizes: “They’re bad guys. She’s doing community service.”

The comedy comes from Segel’s reaction shots: discovering a knife in Margo’s purse, finding blood on her collar, processing information with HIMYM-style delayed comprehension. Weaving plays it straight—no winking, no camp, which makes violence funnier and scarier.

Wirkola’s Splatter

Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, The Trip, Violent Night) specializes in Norwegian-black-humor-meets-American-genre. Over Your Dead Body is his English-language rom-com debut, though “rom-com” here means romantic comedy with decapitations. The trailer’s set piece—Segel and Weaving double-dating with another couple, Margo excusing herself to kill someone in restaurant bathroom, returning with blood on her cheek that Segel wipes off, thinking it’s ketchup—establishes tone.

The Segel Transformation

Segel, 46, spent post-HIMYM years in indie dramedies (The Discovery, Our Friend) and serious roles (The End of the Tour as David Foster Wallace). Over Your Dead Body returns him to comedy, but corrupted—his natural sweetness becomes pathetic, then complicit. The mortician profession is perfect: Arthur deals with death daily, but Margo makes it personal.

The Weaving Ascendence

Samara Weaving, 32, owns horror-comedy. The Babysitter (2017), Ready or Not (2019), Guns Akimbo (2019)—she’s Final Girl and Villainess simultaneously. Over Your Dead Body lets her be both: Margo is sympathetic (killing abusers) and terrifying (enjoying it too much). The trailer’s final shot—Weaving, covered in blood, asking Segel “Still want to get breakfast?”—is signature.

Rom-Com Revival

2026’s romantic comedy resurgence—The Idea of You (2024), Anyone But You (2023)—meets horror’s continued dominance. Over Your Dead Body splits difference: date movie for couples who enjoyed Fresh (2022) and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022). The Valentine’s Day 2026 trailer release confirms marketing strategy.
