MGM+’s Robin Hood series fires its first arrow November 2 with a two-episode premiere that promises to put a “modern energy” spin on the legendary outlaw tale. Starring newcomer Jack Patten as the titular Rob alongside Game of Thrones icon Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham, this 10-episode Lionsgate Television production aims to blend historical authenticity with psychological depth.

Sean Bean returns to his villainous roots as the Sheriff of Nottingham, bringing Game of Thrones gravitas to the classic antagonist role. Joining him is Connie Nielsen (GladiatorWonder Woman) as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, creating a powerhouse supporting cast around Patten’s Rob and Lauren McQueen’s Marian. The ensemble also features Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and Steven Waddington (Slow Horses).

Created by John Glenn (SEAL Team) with Jonathan English serving as executive producer and director, Robin Hood filmed in Serbia during 2024. The production budget exceeded $50 million for the complete season, with each episode running approximately 50 minutes. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman executive produces alongside Glenn and English for the ambitious period drama.

Storytelling

Unlike previous adaptations, this Robin Hood focuses specifically on the aftermath of the Norman invasion of England, exploring the Saxon-Norman cultural clash through Rob and Marian’s forbidden romance. “We teach those who tread on us. Nothing will keep them safe from vengeance,” declares the teaser trailer, emphasizing the series’ darker political undertones.

The storyline follows Rob, a Saxon forester’s son, as he unites with Marian, daughter of a Norman lord, to fight royal corruption. As Rob rises as the rebel leader in Sherwood Forest, Marian infiltrates court power structures, creating dual narrative threads that promise complex character development throughout the season.

MGM+ November Launch

Robin Hood launches November 2 exclusively on MGM+ with a special two-episode premiere, followed by weekly releases leading to the December 28 season finale. The streaming platform secured international distribution across the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Latin America, positioning the series as MGM+’s flagship fall content.

Industry tracking suggests MGM+ invested heavily in marketing, with the official trailer generating over 2 million views within 48 hours of release. The series directly competes with Netflix’s medieval offerings and Amazon Prime’s fantasy content, though early buzz indicates strong audience anticipation for Bean’s return to television.

Controversy emerged regarding historical accuracy, with some medieval scholars questioning the series’ “modern energy” approach to 12th-century politics. However, showrunner Glenn defended the creative choices, stating the focus remains on timeless themes of justice and freedom rather than strict historical documentation.
