The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Just Showed Up to CinemaCon and Blew the Roof Off

Robert Downey Jr. walked onto the CinemaCon stage to the sound of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” and if that isn’t perfect casting, I don’t know what is. The first major trailer for Avengers: Doomsday debuted in Las Vegas, and based on the descriptions leaking from the Dolby Colosseum, Marvel has decided to stop playing coy and start showing us exactly what we’ve been waiting for: Doctor Doom in full comic-accurate glory, the X-Men doing more than standing in doorways, and enough character matchups to fuel fan fiction for the next decade.

The trailer opens on Professor Xavier inside the X-Mansion, watching an energy rift tear through the sky. That’s your establishing shot. That’s your “this is not a drill” moment. From there, it builds into a cascade of reveals that feel designed specifically to break the internet once the footage finally goes public.

The centerpiece is Doom himself. After months of teasing—after that frustrating glimpse in The Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits where his face remained hidden—Robert Downey Jr. finally appears unmasked as Victor Von Doom. He’s sporting the comic-accurate green cloak and metal mask, speaking with a vaguely Slavic accent, and generally looking like he owns every room he enters. Co-director Joe Russo described him as “not simply a villain—he’s one of the most complex Marvel characters. He’s always three moves ahead.” Downey, addressing the crowd, admitted he “couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team—let alone as a new character.”

But the trailer isn’t just a Doom showcase. It’s a buffet of matchups that Marvel has been teasing for years. Thor faces off against Doom in a one-on-one battle where the villain catches Mjolnir mid-flight—a feat previously only accomplished by Hela before she shattered the hammer. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor delivers a warning to the assembled heroes: “Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this: If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. Mark my words: We are going to need a miracle.”

Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn, assumes an opponent’s form to battle Yelena Belova. Gambit, Channing Tatum’s scene-stealer from Deadpool & Wolverine, throws cards at Shang-Chi. Cyclops fires optic blasts with the kind of visual flair that finally does the character justice. And Steve Rogers—yes, Chris Evans is back—grabs Thor’s hammer and says, “It’s not possible,” suggesting that whatever incarnation of Captain America we’re getting, he’s still worthy.

The stakes are established through the concept of incursions—worlds colliding across the multiverse. The Fox X-Men universe appears to be bleeding into the MCU proper, and Doom seems to be either causing or exploiting this chaos for his own ends. The trailer communicates a genuine sense of scale and consequence that the earlier, muted teasers failed to deliver.

Kevin Feige closed Disney’s presentation by hyping the X-Men’s long-awaited return, and the footage suggests he wasn’t overselling. This isn’t a cameo or a tease; this is full integration, with multiple X-Men characters sharing screen time with established MCU heroes in what looks like actual plot-relevant scenes rather than post-credits stingers.

The only question mark is the Fantastic Four’s role. Early descriptions suggest Reed Richards doesn’t get major moments in this trailer, which has some fans worried that Doom’s foundational rivalry with Mister Fantastic might get shortchanged in favor of more marketable matchups. But with Pedro Pascal’s Reed established in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there’s reason to believe the film itself will deliver on that dynamic even if the marketing focuses on the Avengers.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026, currently scheduled against Dune: Part Three in what the stars have dubbed “Dunesday.” Disney isn’t backing down—they’re launching their own premium large-format certification program called Infinity: Vision, debuting in September with the Avengers: Endgame re-release. They want you seeing Doom on the biggest screen possible, and after this trailer, you’ll probably want to.

Assemble for the endgame—see Avengers: Doomsday in theaters December 18, 2026, and witness Robert Downey Jr.’s return as the MCU’s most dangerous villain.
