Marvel fans are in for a treat in 2024 as the iconic character Wolverine is set to make not one, but two significant returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While the buzz surrounding Hugh Jackman’s reprisal of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 has taken center stage, there’s another exciting appearance that deserves attention.

Wolverine’s Comeback Timeline

Wolverine is the most popular character in the X-Men and fans have been eagerly waiting for their favorite mutant’s return. However, Deadpool 3’s production has faced delays due to ongoing strikes involving writers and actors in Hollywood. While there hasn’t been an official announcement of a delay beyond the initial push from September to November 2024 (later moved up to May 2024), fans noticed that the film was removed from Disney’s 2024 release schedule.

Wolverine’s Prelude in the MCU

Before the much-anticipated release of Deadpool 3, Wolverine will make a prior appearance in the MCU through the animated series X-Men ’97. Initially slated for a Fall 2023 premiere, the show is now scheduled to debut on Disney+ in “early 2024.”

While this portrayal of Wolverine may not feature Hugh Jackman, fans can still find comfort in the familiarity of the character, especially if they are fans of X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s. X-Men ’97 serves as a spiritual successor to the beloved original series and even brings back some of the original cast, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine. The show is poised to capture the essence of the Uncanny X-Men.

The Animated Wolverine’s Appeal

The Wolverine featured in X-Men ’97 promises to deliver the gruff, tough, and fierce fighter that fans have come to love. Laden with Logan’s signature catchphrases like “Bub,” this character will evoke nostalgia while igniting fresh excitement for Wolverine’s future in the MCU.

Wolverine’s unmistakable voice, mannerisms, and classic suit make him an instantly recognizable and cherished figure, regardless of the medium—comics, animation, or live-action.

The Expanding MCU X-Men Universe

Although Wolverine is currently the sole X-Men character officially confirmed for both upcoming animated and live-action projects, he is unlikely to remain alone for long. With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the X-Men’s entry into the MCU is imminent. Mutants are gradually being introduced, with appearances such as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the confirmation of mutants in Ms. Marvel and Namor.

While the long-term portrayal of Wolverine in the MCU remains uncertain, Hugh Jackman has hinted that this might be his final stint as the character. However, his confirmed presence in the MCU marks a significant development, placing him ahead of fan-favorite X-Men characters like Storm, Rogue, and Magneto.

2024 promises a double dose of Wolverine—a live-action rendition in Deadpool 3 and an animated appearance in X-Men ’97. Marvel fans can look forward to an exciting year as the X-Men’s journey unfolds in the MCU.
